Junior Climbing
Schools
As the GCSE PE syllabus extends to include adventurous activities, indoor climbing is becoming a regular feature for many schools.
Climbing provides a way towards getting an all round workout but we have seen particularly good results with those children not drawn to traditional team or competitive sports. Boys and girls partake on an equal footing, although girls often outperform their male counterparts.
Results extend beyond the physical benefits of getting active. Many teachers use climbing as a way of improving behavioural characteristics by increasing self reliance, trust and team work.
We are able to tailor a climbing programme specifically to match a schools requirement. This might be a one off reward day towards the end of term or a fully instructed syllabus based full term programme.
TERM BOOKINGS
High Sports provide a number of term based programmes that will provide students with a foundation in climbing, belaying, abseiling and rope-craft. All programmes are modular and are therefore suitable for being run across multiple terms.
Log books and/or certificate of achievement awards can be provided as a record for both the school and student.
Timing is flexible, including closed sessions which are typically run in the morning.
REWARD DAYS
Not all schools climbing need be about learning climbing technique and log books. Climbing is great fun and is an ideal end of term activity. Sessions can be organised from 1 hour to half a day and can include climbing, abseiling or one of our special challenge days!
SPECIAL NEEDS
Climbing is one of the most accessible sports activities. We are able to provide climbing sessions for a wide range of behavioural, mental and physical disabilities.
Appropriately sized groups and lower instructor ratios are used where necessary. There are also several closed sessions available, typically in the morning, when public climbing is not taking place.
If you would like to discuss your particular requirements, please call your local centre.
START A CLUB
Climbing is enormously popular with young people so why not think about starting a school climbing club. We will provide you with a dedicated after school slot each week and set out a range of activities which will be delivered by our instructors.
To help get you started we can provide posters and parent information sheets.
We will also organise inter-school competitions to see who has the hottest climbers in the region.
We have only a limited number of slots per week at each centre so contact your local centre soon!
INSTRUCTING ASSISTANTS
We can train teaching staff to assist the instructor during climbing sessions. This helps with instructor/student ratios which can keep costs down and may also be a starting point for further training leading to an instructing qualification.
NICAS
The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme is a UK wide scheme that provides a structured and modular approach for young people to develop their climbing skills.
Levels 1 and 2 provide basic skills and are ideally suited for schools delivery over a relatively short period of time. Levels 3, 4 and 5 require an increasing amount of dedication from the individual and can be attained either through a more focused schools programme or, more commonly, by the student attending their local climbing wall in their own time.
To discuss NICAS, please contact your local centre.
