High Sports Squad at BMC Youth Series Finals

Grace, a High Sports Plymouth Squad climber came 3rd in the South West regional rounds to earn her place in the National Final of the BMC Youth Climbing Series 2016. An amazing achievement and now she is ranked 30th in the UK in her age category!

We asked her a few questions about the finals:

Did you enjoy the final?
I did, it was a new experience for me and I enjoyed trying a different wall and new routes.

Do you want to go back again next year?
YES! Keen to put the hard work in to get to the final again.

What was the first thing you noticed when you walked into Ratho?
Very big and very full of people - it was a little bit scary on the first boulder problem as I didn't know what it would be like, but OK after that.

What was your favorite route/problem and why?
Route 2 - there were lots of different types of holds & techniques needed all the way through, which made it interesting and fun.

What did you find most difficult about the bouldering?
All of it! I found it a really powerful set, so lots of the moves felt hard for me, despite most of the holds being ok.

Is there any part of your climbing you want to focus on to improve for next year?

More experience in different places, climbing different routes and boulder problems.

This was your first competition at National level, what would you say to encourage a new climber who is thinking about entering the Regional Rounds?
Believe in yourself - if you think positive, you can do it! It's a friendly comp in the regional rounds AND even at the finals everyone was still cheering for each other, even though they were competing against each other.

We'd like to also congratulate our other Squad climbers who all performed fantastically in the Finals - Ryan & Layla from St Albans and Ben & Roz from Crawley - the next generation of climbers!
